Three contrasting Early Years centres show how they help to develop speech and language skills in children through classroom environments, involving parents, and speech-therapy strategies.
Every Child a Talker (ECaT) has transformed the enabling environment of the baby room at The Hall Day Nursery in Sheffield. Babies play in talk-friendly spaces and are sat opposite each another or near mirrors to encourage early communication.
Using ECaT has also helped Clifton Children's Centre in Hull to develop positive relationships with their predominantly Polish parents. Stay and play is flourishing now that activities reflect heritage and encourage parents to access multi-agency services.
As part of its enabling environments, Evesham Nursery in Worcestershire has introduced forest school for all children. A speech and language therapist works with staff to develop strategies that help EYFS children move on to the next language stage.
