An insight into how a special school uses the games their students play in their spare time to support a rigorous maths curriculum.
Baliol School in the north of England is a residential school for boys with an inclusive approach to teaching for EBD students.
Working with the school's residential staff, deputy head and maths teacher Peter Henderson devised a scheme that finds maths content in the boys' social activities, such as darts and snooker, and builds on them in the classroom.
Peter and students enjoy playing number bonds based on a game of darts, and coordinates using a "four in a row" counter game.
Finally, we see how boys become much more engaged with their maths lessons when they are able to connect it with their own lives.
