Challenge and Change

February 14, 2014 by Administrator

Find out how Hornsey Girls School in north London has embraced the Peer Mentoring Programme.

The school's goal was to break down barriers and create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students. As such, mentors at this highly multi-cultural school represent a cross-section of the school population, even those on the margins of exclusion.

This project incorporates special clubs and events after school and at lunch times that provide individuals with a safe place to "be themselves". Mentors are expected to model positive behaviour and take on various responsibilities that have a knock-on effect upon attendance and attainment.

Peer mentoring has now become such an important part of the school's culture that it was openly acknowledged in their most recent Ofsted report. Find out what it takes to create a truly sustainable scheme, and how it can affect the whole school ethos.
