An interactive 'smart floor' is investigated in a video showcasing the role of engineering in science, for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students.
On exhibition at Sheffield Hallam University, the smart floor uses load cells hidden underneath the floor panel to detect movement and measure forces moving across the panels. This information is then projected into various simulations.
Although relatively new, this technology is incredibly versatile and its applications could be widespread. Incorporating some of the current computer game technology, the smart floor could be used to help encourage young children to exercise.
Current simulations look at improving balance, particularly in the elderly or those recovering from injuries.
As the technolgoy develops, it will hopefully be used by elite athletes for maximum efficiency in training.
