The Floor Plan of Durham Cathedral

February 7, 2014 by Administrator

Mathematician, Steve Humble, discovers hidden maths in relation to the architecture of Durham Cathedral. Suitable for Key Stage 3 maths students.

Dr Maths, otherwise known as Steve, examines how a cathedral like Durham was designed using master mason's practical geometry, symmetry, pattern and proportions.

The first challenge is to measure out the floor plan using a simple compass. Students can take part in activities such as calculating how many times their classroom will fit inside Durham Cathedral.

The video uses Northern Architecture's Making Architecture Count project for schools.
