An English NQT is given guidance on clear teaching objectives and lesson aims with her Year 9 class, and learns to have high expectations and honest post-lesson self-appraisal on lesson success and pedagogy.
Gemma Sharp from Kimberley School in Nottingham knows her Key Stage 3 class has potential but is frustrated they're not more engaged during poetry lessons. Teaching consultant Phil Beadle puts the spotlight on teaching technique, emphasising key concepts of rhyme and half-rhyme, to be certain that students know the difference.
Phil believes every teacher should be clear from the outset about the specific objectives of each lesson, what they should expect students to have learnt at its conclusion and whether that learning has actually taken place.
He tells Gemma that there should be no limit to a teacher's expectations. He says; "You should think every kid I ever teach can understand every concept in the curriculum, and if they don't, it?s my fault."
