Guided Reading: Special Needs

February 7, 2014 by Administrator

An insight into a Year 6 guided reading group, which mostly comprises of EAL and SEN pupils, where the teacher demonstrates the strategies she uses to support learning in literacy lessons.

At Princess May Primary in Hackney most pupils speak English as an Additional Language (EAL), and many also have additional Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Learning support teacher Jo Goodwin groups pupils according to ability rather than age, and uses props, such as horses or dragons, for her SEN guided readers.

She advocates using additional orientation clues to help the pupils navigate through the story, and uses prior discussion of the title, blurb and picture on the cover to do this.

She also encourages the Key Stage 2 pupils to articulate what they already know about a topic and to predict what is likely to happen next in the book.
