Independent Learning in English - Romeo and Juliet

February 7, 2014 by Administrator

A secondary English teacher shows how she brings her subject to life with Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, for Key Stage 3 and 4 students, with advice on encouraging independent learning in students.

English teacher Laura Lennon believes if English doesn't come alive in the classroom, then something is missing. She develops lesson plans which allow students to approach literature in a modern, engaging and individual way.

For her, the litmus test is how hard the students work on any task outside of the classroom. Using Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, Act 3, Scene 1 - she asks groups of students to create a resource that other students can use to understand the scene.

Each group has a different section of the scene to interpret. What will they come up with to engage others in what could be just another dry old text?
