Primary Geography - On Location

February 7, 2014 by Administrator

These geography lesson-planning ideas cover mapping and renewable energy. They're suitable for Key Stage 2 but also adaptable for Key Stage 1.

The first looks at orienteering skills, combining physical education (PE) with geography. The teachers introduce map symbols in the first activity, which quickly progresses to pupils discovering a trail around their school grounds.

The next example uses an unlabelled map of a familiar location, challenging the children to identify renewable energy resources in their locality.

Finally, the teachers draw these KS2 pupils into an imaginary scenario where they're told that a location they love - a farm - is going to be pulled down to make way for a new power station. Using persuasive argument techniques such as powerful words and rhetorical questions, the children develop an oral argument against the power station.

The pupils are eventually told the scenario isn't true, but their arguments were more passionate by believing it was.
