Year 7 pupils are introduced to chemical reactions and the combustion process, in a complete lesson demonstrating how ICT can be used to teach science topics.
The classic combustion experiment of a burning candle in a sealed jar is demonstrated by Paul Preece at Camborne Science and Community College.
He puts carbon dioxide, oxygen and humidity sensors inside the jar as the candle burns, with graphs from each sensor displayed in real time on the whiteboard, showing the pupils exactly what is happening inside the jar.
This lesson was part of a joint Association for Science Education/BECTA project exploring how ICT can support traditionally hard to teach science topics. It is an extended version of one of the lessons featured in the video Hard to Teach - Secondary Science Using ICT.
