Primary RE - Being Reflective

February 3, 2014 by Administrator

A Year 2 RE lesson at Wolsey House Primary in Leicester, uses the Buddhist story Siddhartha and the Swan to teach the pupils about being reflective.

Teacher Michelle Green gives the class pictures of places where she feels calm, and can think in peace. Michelle then tells the tale of Siddhartha and the Swan, using a box of props to help illustrate the moral and spiritual dimensions of the story.

Michelle teaches the lesson outside, which she hopes will add to the idea of finding a place to be reflective. She uses lots of "I wonder?" questions, giving the children plenty of opportunity to reflect, and is careful to demonstrate that in RE there is rarely only one correct answer.

Michelle concludes her lesson by asking the children to think of some wise words, or rules, they would display in a reflective space.
