Rachel Atkins

February 3, 2014 by Administrator

A reception teacher takes the good to outstanding challenge, as top school inspector Clare Gillies watches her class make telescopes. The experts are on hand to provide pedagogical and professional development advice.

Clare's feedback on Rachel Atkins' session raises clear areas for improvement, including linking planned activities to learning objectives, and being clear on what she wants the children to learn . She could also challenge her class further with questions.

Rachel also takes advice from members of the Teachers TV online community who have watched footage of her teaching.

Rachel then has a one-to-one CPD session with Early Years Consultant Hilary Bell to work on pedagogy. Hilary also feels the class could learn what the telescope does before the practical activity of making one, and she urges Rachel to challenge the children further with picture books to reinforce their learning.

Rachel also gets tips from presentation and communications expert Mo Shapiro, who encourages her to add more contrast to her voice, which makes her body language and facial expressions more expressive.

Rachel then has just three weeks back in the classroom at Tyssen Community School, to apply the advice before Clare returns to give the final verdict. Will Rachel raise her game and improve from good to outstanding?
