Behaviour expert John Bayley gives two Year 3 teachers some practical tips on peer observation, in this pedagogy resource.
Experienced teacher Sarah Wright and newly qualified teacher (NQT) Sophia both teach literacy lessons, but in very different styles, at Hamilton Primary School in Colchester.
Sarah notices that some children in Sophia's lesson are distracted during the lengthy feedback sessions. She suggests that the adoption of talk partners would add pace and improve their focus.
When observing Sarah's lesson, Sophia is impressed by the way the children are encouraged to produce their own success criteria before starting a piece of work. John also points out to Sophia how Sarah makes good use of higher-level questioning.
Having found the experience highly valuable, Sophia and Sarah are keen to put the new ideas into practice and to continue observations in the future.
