Two special schools reveal how they enable students with profound and multiple learning disabilities (MLD, SLD and PMLD) to express their choices about their lives and their learning.
The Pupil Voice Special Schools Group, coordinated by the University of Hertfordshire Education Department, is an action research group which looks at how MLD, SLD and PMLD students can participate effectively in the learning choices being offered to them.
This programme looks at the work of two north London schools, Kingsley High School and Oakleigh School, both of which are part of the group.
At Oakleigh, the focus has a curriculum basis. The school wants to make sure that when it comes to decisions about their own learning, the choice is the student's own and not the teachers. The school also wants to involve pupils meaningfully in their annual reviews.
At Kingsley we look at how student voice is expressed about break and lunch times.
