KS1/2 Maths - Making Maths Real

February 3, 2014 by Administrator

Headteacher Maggie Hastie and her team at Weeke Primary School, share their enthusiastic approach to teaching maths, aiming to show its relevance in real life.

They believe putting the fun back into maths is a key factor in helping pupils to enjoy and gain maximum benefit from their lessons. Several teachers have become maths specialists and mentors for other staff members.

Years 1 and 2 start their lesson by singing 'Alice the Camel' before tackling number bonds, while Years 3 and 4 warm up with a maths rap where they act out the mathematical symbols they will use later.

Year 6 go on a treasure hunt to find mathematical clues hidden around the school, and a maths booster group gives those in need some extra tuition before they join the main lessons.

They pupils also use role play to bring maths to life, with activities such as running a pizza restaurant and calculating bills providing them with real life maths experiences.
