Narrowing the Gap - KS3/4 Boys Achievement

January 27, 2014 by Administrator

This programme highlights some of the tactics used at Hall Green School, Birmingham, aimed to improve achievement levels and narrow the gender gap.

In the last three years boys have outperformed girls at KS3 in terms of contextual value added (CVA) progress, and in one of those years surpassed the girls at GCSE level as well, bucking the national trend.

Headteacher, Alan Greaney, believes in pushing pupils - particularly those who coast along and need more motivation.

And as part of a specialist Arts college, the English department often leads the way in this drive to motivate boys. Gavin Saunders, head of English, uses a mixed approach when seeking to engage the disengaged, as we witness here.
