Nuclear physicist Paul Stevenson spends months examining the largest and smallest objects in the universe, but can he inspire a GCSE science class?
During his visit to Uckfield Community Technology College in East Sussex Dr Stevenson sets about explaining how nuclear physics can be applied to a vast range of fields to a group of GCSE pupils.
Although he confesses himself to be nervous at the prospect of facing a group of fifteen year olds rather than graduate students, he gets out into the classroom and energizes the pupils. He highlights how nuclear physics touches on a huge spectrum of works from medical treatment to electricity and even espionage!
He then breaks them into small research groups to report to their findings to the rest of the class, but the results are somewhat mixed.
