This video for Early Years teachers explores how a primary school has embraced play and active learning, which are central to the Learning and Development theme in the new EYFS framework.
Play is central to the new requirements of the EYFS and can provide evidence for all six areas of learning. Albert Bradbeer Primary in Longbridge enthusiastically promotes the role of play and active learning.
Exploring what this looks like in practice are former Albert Bradbeer pupil, Professor Christine Pascal from the Centre for Research in Early Childhood, and the school's Foundation Stage co-ordinator Kathryn Pritchard.
Planning the role-play area is an essential starting point for each term's topic and involves the children as much as the teachers. A zoo is the popular choice this term, with a smaller group opting to build a swamp.
Kathryn demonstrates how to use the role-play areas and then observes the children to see their development. Through the ensuing child-initiated play, the pupils demonstrate sustained shared thinking, collaboration and teamwork.
Christine reviews the benefits of the new framework, including how it can equip children with life skills. She also examines the challenge it will pose for some schools.
