Whether schools become successful by running themselves like commercial companies is the focus of this video for primary and secondary headteachers, as BBC business presenter Adam Shaw investigates.
Adam visits two secondary schools and one primary which have climbed up the value-added league tables - Capital City Academy in Willesden, Preston Manor High in Wembley and Tidemill Primary in Deptford.
He discovers the schools have complex timetables and give teachers extra time out of the classroom, which goes against what would normally be considered good business practice, but two basic business principals of putting customers first and making the most of human resources are demonstrated in all three examples.
The customers are the pupils who are offered personalised learning, while the human resources (the staff) are given more time to prepare the lessons, resulting in higher profits in the form of improved exam results.
