How can you stop girls being marginalised in a school where two thirds of the students are boys? One headteacher describes her strategies to ensure the female minority achieves its potential.
Due to the number of girls-only schools in the area, Swanlea School in the East End of London has an intake dominated by boys, and has done since 1990 when Linda Austin became headteacher.
Linda shows what steps the school has taken to ensure that the girls' voices are heard loud and clear in this male-dominated environment, such as organising a number of all boy tutor groups so that every mixed class has equal numbers of boys and girls.
Throughout the school, the staff work hard to ensure that the girls have every opportunity to achieve their educational potential.
