Students under Surveillance

January 21, 2014 by Administrator

Technology offers schools unprecedented ways of surveying students' behaviour and movement. This video for primary and secondary headteachers examines the potential benefits and downfalls.

One secondary school featured has over 100 CCTV cameras watching its students in classrooms, in corridors and in the playground. Another school has added a tool to its virtual learning environment (VLE), allowing parents to keep tabs on their children's homework assignments, timetables and test results.

Elsewhere, a number of pre-school nurseries are providing parents with password-protected visual access to their children via a webcam. This video looks at whether this is a positive thing.

Finally, we look at a supposedly secure registration system that uses fingerprint recognition. One of the schools in this video uses this system but an IT expert easily hacks into it, raising questions about the legitimacy of using surveillance technology.
