Theatre educationalist Sharon Aviva Jones discusses the importance of school theatre visits and reveals the essential elements for a successful post-performance workshop.
A group of Year 4 pupils from Snowsfield Primary School in Southwark, south London are on a trip to the nearby Unicorn Theatre. The children are there to watch a play about bullying and participate in a post-performance workshop.
Sharon shows the class how theatre can be used to investigate a topic. According to her, there are seven key ideas that make a successful post-performance workshop. These include the teacher "going into role" clearly and convincingly, the use of "thought tracking" and focusing on a single incident or action.
