Literacy Behind Bars

January 21, 2014 by Administrator

An English teacher, desperate to improve literacy levels for her Year 9 boys, takes a trip to prison to learn about a range of new techniques being used to teach literacy to inmates.

Laura Jewiss from Sittingbourne Community College in Kent visits Chelmsford Prison to meet literacy teacher Jackie Hewitt. Jackie has developed a range of radical teaching techniques - that make use of soap, sand and even toothpaste - to help inmates learn how to read and write.

Back at school, Laura finds out whether the techniques she learnt in the cells can be adapted to work in the classroom and, in doing so, reveals what lessons a mainstream teacher can take from prison education.
