Using Institutions - The Ordnance Survey

January 9, 2014 by Administrator

Pupils at Saltford C of E Primary School, on the outskirts of Bristol, use Ordnance Survey resources as part of their geography and local studies projects.

They begin by using the Ordnance Survey website, MapZone, to learn how to read map symbols. They then support their learning on a field trip.

They have two objectives on the field trip:

  • to take photos for the Geograph website, where photos from across the British Isles are matched up with grid references on an ordnance survey map
  • to take photos, for their local studies project, of each other holding map symbols against significant features in their local environment

Armed with their pictures the children then visit the ICT suite where they complete their local studies project by electronically putting their photos on an Ordnance Survey map.

Once they have completed this they submit their photos of the landscape to the Geograph website. These photos are now available to view on line.
