Urban Leadership - Boys' School Turnaround

January 9, 2014 by Administrator

This programme looks at Mel Woodcock's work at an urban all-boys school in Manchester, facing strong challenges in making it a success.

Urban schools can be tough, and single sex schools can bring their own issues, especially in a city where the catchment area includes some of the most deprived communities in the country.

When Mel Woodcock became headteacher at North Manchester High School for Boys it was in special measures. He had two options for the single sex school: make it a cross between an army camp and rugby club, or take a softer approach.

Mel chose the softer approach and has seen the creativity in his pupils blossom in drama, dance and art. Last year the school achieved specialist status as an arts college and all important funding.
