Explore an innovative approach to lesson planning, where mixed ability maths and science pupils plan and deliver parts of their lessons, providing benefits not only for themselves but for teachers too.
At Sweyne Park School, deputy head Sally Pemberton plans a decimal places lesson with a group of Year 9 maths pupils. By planning with the pupils, Sally can see how the topic is understood and work out how the lesson should be delivered to the whole class.
Later, the pupils deliver the maths lesson to their peers, demonstrating how the process can inform teachers about how pupils learn whilst also providing pupils with an ownership of their learning.
This approach to lesson planning is also taken up by the science department, where NQT Rebekah Collins discusses a lesson with her Year 10 pupils and hears their thoughts on the lesson structure, activities and resources.
