Interpretation in Secondary History

January 9, 2014 by Administrator

Ben Walsh, author and teacher trainer, gives some expert advice on ways to introduce and develop interpretation skills into secondary history teaching.

Walsh joins Esther Arnott, a second year teacher from Lampton School in London, to take a step-by-step look at how to incorporate interpretations into her Year 7 lessons on Henry II and Becket.

They start by getting pupils to explore the idea of reputations and then develop the lesson around film sources and authorship, with a view to understanding why Henry II has the negative reputation that he has today.

Walsh believes that this is just the start of a long process and that interpretation needs to be embedded into lessons and schemes of work.
