How best to teach the more gifted and talented students in mixed-ability classes attracts much debate but little consensus. Behaviour expert John Bayley observes two secondary teachers with different approaches.

To help stretch his top Key Stage 4 students, Daniel Smith from Capital City Academy in north London is seeking John's pedagogical advice. John watches Daniel teach basic concepts to a Year 10 music class just starting their GCSE course.

Fiona O'Sullivan is already differentiating with her Year 11 English class. She gives the more able students different worksheets from the rest of the class, but John has ideas on how she could adopt a more radical approach.
