This programme takes a look at a number of east London schools' techniques in a scheme to teach Latin to their pupils.
Selwyn Primary is one of a dozen state primary schools teaching Latin in Newham, east London. Hilary Koppel, G&T coordinator finds it invigorating. Jane Robinson, G&T coordinator in the borough, speaks about the success of the initiative.
Hilary teaches grammar in an accessible way and her pupils deepen their understanding of words, widen their vocabulary and problem solve. She also explores history and invites Alex Horne, a comedian whose stand-up show is based on Latin, to share his passion for ancient Rome. For the headteacher it all adds value and does wonders for pupils' self esteem.
Various teachers are involved in the scheme, not just Latin specialists. Sean Tobin, headteacher at West Ham Church School, learns alongside his pupils with the help of an online course and DVD. The pupils find it fun and like learning about the past, working in groups and on computers.
Michelle Cousins, gifted and talented coordinator at Sandringham School feels her pupils enjoy the novelty and learn transferable skills.
