Great Literacy Expectations

December 13, 2013 by Administrator

This programme takes a look at the work that has been done at Charles Dickens Primary School in London to take it out of special measures to become one of the best in the area.

When Liz Owens took over as headteacher, the school was in special measures having failed inspection, with problems in English, mathematics and science.

Six years later, it had been transformed into one of the best schools in the area. This turnaround, and in particular the huge improvement in results in English, was partly the result of an exciting and innovative approach to literacy.

The whole curriculum is now more integrated, and the children are much more motivated thanks to the use of drama, art and music as a gateway into reading and writing.

A Nigerian artist from the Tate, a professional musician in residence, and many links to local arts organizations, have also postively helped change the school's fortunes.
