Using a case-study from Raynsford Lower School, Bedfordshire, the programme examines how to deliver the Investigating Materials element of the KS1 Art curriculum, focussing on the planning, resources and vocabulary involved.
Year 1 pupils investigate the qualities of a variety of natural and man-made materials. They also learn the language and skills needed for a weaving project and are encouraged to create their own designs. Their classroom teacher Debbie Shelvey, encourages them to develop their art vocabulary and highlights how this project links with science through a shared vocabulary list. The pupils explore ideas and use worksheets to compare their own and others' work, as well as reflecting on how they could adapt and improve.
Throughout planning the project art co-ordinator, Gilly Chegwyn, is on hand to offer Debbie support and advice.
