Research shows that increasing parental involvement in education has a significant effect on pupil attainment. The initiatives taken by Moulsecoomb Primary School, shown in this programme, offer inspiring examples and strategies to encourage parents to get involved.
When headteacher Charles Davies first arrived at Moulsecoomb five years ago, his aim was to raise pupil attainment. Central to this was the need to get parents involved, but many parents on the Moulsecoomb estate had negative feelings about their own schooling and education in general.
To help them overcome their apathy, he called in the help of community worker Lucy Rayner to help to create a more attractive and welcoming school environment.
Davies' project has now been running for a year and has successfully initiated 15 parent-run activities, including fitness groups, cookery and dance clubs and an accredited course to support pupil learning.
This programme explores:
- Showing parents they have s stake in their children's education
- Getting parents involved in running school activities
- Creating a more attractive and welcoming school envrionment
